Corn maze ranked one of best in U.S.

- By Amy Coval

If you’re looking to get lost in a corn maze that was recently named one of the nation’s best, head to Moosup.

TimeOut, a popular website that covers food, arts, culture and things to do, ranked Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm’s corn maze in Moosup as one of the “biggest and best corn mazes” in the U.S. The site compiled its roundup of the best mazes by looking at a variety of factors like number of acres as well as intricacy of maze design.

Ekonk Hill’s corn maze changes its theme annually. The farm took to Facebook to announce its 2022 theme, pollinators, meaning the aerial view of the maze is full of images of bees, butterflies and flowers. Past themes included a night sky maze and a farm maze.

According to the farm, visitors spend an average of 90 minutes in the maze, but warn those who enter not to be in a big rush to leave, as it is easy to get lost in the miles of paths on Ekonk’s property. TimeOut emphasized that the maze is well-suited for younger children because of the stations within the corn that have educational content about the different farm animals on the property. Afterwards, TimeOut suggests guests can celebrate their escape from the maze with a scoop of the homemade ice cream.

The maze opened on Sep. 17 and will be open until Oct. 30, the day before Halloween. Additionally, on Oct. 22 and 29, Ekonk Hill will have its “Night Maze” during which visitors can take a flashlight and complete the maze after dark. Admission to the farm includes the giant corn maze, mini maze, wagon rides and time with the barnyard animals and costs $12 for visitors over 10 years old, $8 for children ages 4 — 10 and free for children ages 3 and under.

In addition to the corn maze, Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm sells its frozen turkeys as well as other kinds of poultry and meat. There are also apple cider donuts and and other local goods for sale on the farm. Ekonk Hill is familyowned and operated by the Hermonot’s and is the largest grower of pastureraised turkeys in Connecticut, according to their site.
