David Berman
David Berman died on January 20th at the age of 99 years, 11 months, and 6 days at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a short illness.
He had been looking forward to celebrating his 100th birthday on February 14th, 2023.
Mr. Berman was born to Anna and William Berman of New Haven. He was predeceased by his three older siblings, Irving, Lillian, and Harriet. David was married to Barbara Fromkin of New Haven. They raised their three children in Woodbridge, Connecticut. Barbara passed away in 1983. David was later married to Rhoda Rubens Russota until her death in 2020.
David leaves behind his three adoring daughters, Lisa Gant Kops (Steve) of Guilford, Linda Berman Soffer of Middletown, and Ellen Berman Murphy (Kent) of New City, New York; six grandchildren: Jacob (Alyssa) and Aaron Gant, both of New Haven, Jeffrey (Rachel Grant) Schlesinger of Philadelphia, Zachary Soffer of Branford, Brett Soffer of Middletown, and Daniel Soffer of Guilford.
David was a patient, kind, cerebral and idealistic man and was beloved as a role model for those with whom he interacted both professionally and socially, and especially for his daughters and his grandchildren.
He graduated from Hillhouse High School and the University of Connecticut, and practiced as a Certified Public Accountant throughout his career.
The son of an immigrant roofer, David was a proud handyman and pursued many home and gardening projects while encouraging the involvement of his daughters. In later years he learned the craft of loom weaving; he maintained his own loom on which he created handwoven gifts for family and friends.
David served on various local Boards throughout his lifetime, and volunteered for years at Connecticut Hospice.
He sang with the New Haven Chorale during its early years (of which he was very proud) as well as with the choir of Congregation B’nai Jacob, of which he was nearly a lifetime member.
A Memorial Service will take place at the Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, 543 George Street, New Haven, on Sunday, February 12th at 11:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed. A private burial will follow.
