UConn drops two spots to No. 6 in newest AP Poll

The UConn women’s basketball team moved down two spots to No. 6 in AP Top 25 Poll on Monday after losing at Marquette on Wednesday and winning at Georgetown on Saturday.

UConn (22-4) was ranked at No. 4 last Monday after keeping pace with No. 1 South Carolina after losing to the reigning champs by only four points. However, the Huskies’ loss at Marquette snapped the program’s near 30-year streak without losing consecutive games. UConn also nearly lost the lead over Georgetown on Saturday as the Hoyas got as close as three in the fourth quarter.

The Gamecocks (25-0) continue to hold down the No. 1 ranking and are followed by No. 2 Indiana (23-1), No. 3 Stanford (24-3), No. 4 Utah (22-2) and No. 5 LSU (23-1). South Carolina gave thenNo. 3 LSU its first loss of the season on Sunday, beating the Tigers 88-64 in Columbia.

Besides UConn, the Big East was also represented in the poll by Villanova (22-4), which jumped up one spot to No. 14 in the poll. Both Creighton and Marquette received votes in the poll but were not ranked.

The Huskies host Creighton on Wednesday in Storrs (7 p.m./SNY) before traveling to Pennsylvania on Saturday to face the Wildcats.

UConn remains with just eight available players as it continues to wait for the return of Caroline Ducharme (concussion) and Azzi Fudd (knee). Ducharme did participate in pregame warm-ups in all three of UConn’s games last week but remained unavailable while wearing earplugs on the sideline.

In the first of two NCAA Top 16 reveals last week, UConn was named a No. 1 seed and the No. 4 overall seed going into the final month of the regular season before March’s NCAA Tournament. While a lot can happen between then and now, UConn’s place as a No. 1 seed in the Seattle Regional could be in jeopardy if the team does not win out the rest of its Big East games.

WEEKLY HONORS

Graduate forward Dorka Juhász was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after averaging 16.5 points and a conference-high 13.0 rebounds per game last week.

Creighton junior Emma Ronsiek was also named to the Big East Weekly Honor roll after averaging 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and a 63.2 field goal percentage.
