Ex-Stamford resident Cyndi Lauper nominated for Rock Hall of Fame

- By Jailene Cuevas

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame elected 14 nominees for the class of 2023, one of them being long-time Stamford resident, Cyndi Lauper.

The Emmy, Grammy and Tony award-winning artist, lived in a three-bedroom, fourbathroom home in Stamford for 30 years beginning 1986.

She lived there with her husband, actor Dave Thornton, and their son. Lauper bought the home as a retreat and creative haven in 1986 during the height of her fame following the release of “True Colors” that year. Thornton and Lauper also spent most of school years at the North Stamford home because their son played ice hockey in Connecticut.

While living in Connecticut, Lauper wrote several albums before creating the music for “Kinky Boots” on Broadway in 2010. She wrote the music for the Broadway show in a small wood-paneled loft above the garage. The “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer has won a total of two Grammy’s and has been nominated for 16. One of those nominations was for “best musical theatre album” for “Kinky Boots” in 2017.

In order to be nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of

Fame, an artist or band must have release a commercial recording within 25 years to the year of nomination. Eight out of the 14 nominees are on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot for the first time: Lauper, Missy Elliott, Warren Zevon, Willie Nelson, the White Stripes, Sheryl Crow, George Michael and Joy Division/New Order.

“This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates. These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said on the museum’s website.

Artists like Dolly Parton, Eminem and Lionel Richie were all granted entry in 2022, despite none of their music being classified as rock, traditionally. Parton originally wanted to remove herself from the list because she felt she was “betraying somebody else” by being included with a country, not rock, background. But eventually she announced she would “accept it graciously.”

Fans are able to submit their votes online for the top five artists they want to see inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
