Albertus stuns St. Joseph, wins GNAC championsh­ip

Terry Dawkins finished with a game-high 19 points as Albertus Magnus stunned St. Joseph 83-79 in the GNAC men's basketball championsh­ip game on Sunday in West Hartford.

The second-seeded Falcons led for most of the second half, but the Blue Jays, the tournament's top seed and the top-ranked team in Division III, tied the game at 77 with 2:34 remaining.

However, a free throw and a layup from Dawkins put Albertus (19-9) up for good.

It is the ninth GNAC tournament titles for Albertus, and the eighth for coach Mitch Oliver.

It was the first loss of the season for St. Joseph (27-1).

Albertus earned a spot in the Division III NCAA Tournament and will find out who it will face during the Division III Selection Show on Monday. Canisius 64, Fairfield 51: At Buffalo, N.Y., TJ Gadsden scored 11 points as Canisius beat Fairfield 64-51 on Sunday.

Gadsden also had 14 rebounds for the Golden Griffins (9-19, 7-12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Jordan Henderson was 4 of 12 shooting (2 for 7 from distance) to add 10 points. Tahj Staveskie recorded nine points and was 4 of 11 shooting (1 for 4 from distance).

The Stags (12-17, 8-11) were led in scoring by Caleb Fields, who finished with 15 points. Supreme Cook added 14 points, six rebounds and two steals for Fairfield. TJ Long also had nine points and two steals.

Manhattan 72, Quinnipiac 70: At Hamden, Anthony Nelson had 21 points, including a floater along the ride side of the lane in the closing seconds and Manhattan's 72-70 win against Quinnipiac on Sunday.

As time wound down, Nelson drove left to the top of the key, hesitated and went right and just below the foul line lifted a floater over a taller defender to get the win.

Nelson also had eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals for the Jaspers (11-16, 9-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Josh Roberts added 13 points while shooting 6 of 9 from the field, and he also had seven rebounds and three blocks. Logan Padgett was 3 of 5 shooting, including 2 for 4 from distance, and went 3 for 4 from the line to finish with 11 points.

Matt Balanc led the Bobcats (19-10, 10-8) in scoring, finishing with 19 points. Tyrese Williams added 14 points for Quinnipiac. In addition, Dezi Jones had 13 points.

Yale 76, Cornell 58: At New Haven, EJ Jarvis' 34 points and 10 rebounds led Yale over Cornell 76-58 on Saturday night.

John Poulakidas scored 14 points, shooting 4 for 9 (2 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 5 from the freethrow line for the Bulldogs (19-7, 9-4 Ivy League). August Mahoney recorded 12 points and was 4 of 7 shooting (2 for 4 from distance).

Nazir Williams led the Big Red (16-10, 6-7) in scoring, finishing with 15 points. Guy Ragland Jr. and Isaiah Gray added 13 points apiece. Ragland also had nine rebounds.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Quinnipiac 2, St. Lawrence 1 (OT): At Hamden, Sadie Peart scored at the 3:05 mark in overtime as the Bobcats closed out the Saints in an ECAC Hockey quarterfin­al series.

Kate Reilly scored a game-tying goal in the third period for Quinnipiac (29-8-0), while Logan Angers finished with 24 saves.
