Darien’s Herget’s on quite a mission

When he first went out to Brigham Young University, Trevor Herget met head volleyball coach Shawn Olmstead.

“He saw my last name,” Trevor said. “And he asked me if I knew Todd Herget.”

“That’s my dad,” Trevor answered.

“No way,” Olmstead said. “I want to meet him.” And?

“He did,” the Darien senior said. “It was awesome.”

A linebacker at BYU in 1987 and from 1991-93, Todd Herget was a walkon who became a Butkus Award candidate at a school long known for producing top of the line linebacker­s. Todd got a look from the Buffalo Bills before playing for the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.

Todd and his wife Nancy, who competed in track at BYU, have five sons known for football and much better known for volleyball. All-State selections, Connecticu­t Players of the Year, Todd, Tim, Tyler, Trevor, Thomas … they are a one family Blue Wave.

Trevor Herget, No. 4 son, has never lost a high school volleyball match and is intent on completing his Darien career with a third CIAC Class L championsh­ip in the coming days.

He is the best player in the state. That’s not an argument. Trevor already was selected as GameTimeCT Player of the Year in 2022 and has only gotten better.

If this sounds like a young man headed to play at a Division I university, you would be correct.

That would be in fall of 2025 at BYU.

First, there is Herget’s two-year mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will leave home Aug. 14 to begin his mission in Pocatello, Idaho.

A generation ago, dad did his mission in Cordoba, Argentina.

Todd, who played two years at Ohio State, did his mission in Trujillo, Peru.
