Police: Teen threw shopping cart at officer during Milford street takeover
MILFORD — Police arrested a juvenile on Monday who they say threw a shopping cart at a police officer in December.
Milford police said the arrest stems from a street takeover in the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Bridgeport Avenue. They said an officer found about 100 people and numerous vehicles there around 1:45 a.m. on Dec. 9.
At the time, police said spectators at the street takeover set off fireworks and M80s as the officer pulled into the parking lot.
Police said the officer was confronted by several people, including someone in a red puffer style jacket who threw a shopping cart directly at him. Police said the male suspect ran as the officer tried to take him into custody.
The officer chased down the suspect, but was confronted by a large crowd, police said. The officer was injured after being assaulted from behind, police said.
During the ordeal, police said the officer’s patrol vehicle had been hit, jumped on and had fireworks set off toward it, which caused minor damage.
Detectives began an investigation and identified the male suspect who was wearing the red jacket, police said.
Police said they submitted an arrest warrant to the New Britain Juvenile Court and the suspect was arrested on Monday.
Police said he is a Connecticut resident, but noted they are not releasing his name or town of residence because of his age.
Police said he was charged with criminal attempt at assault of a public safety personnel, interfering with a police officer, first-degree riot and unlawful assembly. They said he is being held at a juvenile detention.
