American Freight closes one of its Conn. stores

- By Luther Turmelle

Discount furniture and appliance retailer American Freight has closed one of its three Connecticut locations.

The chain’s Rocky Hill location at 1930 Silas Deane Highway closed on Sunday, according to the manager of American Freight, who declined to provide their name. The store employed about a half dozen people, they said.

With the closing of the Rocky Hill store, Ohiobased American Freight has just two remaining Connecticut locations: at 65 Holmes Road in Newington and in the Hilltop Commons Shopping Center on Route 34 in Derby. The Derby store opened in March 2023.

closed at that location in 2016. The nearly 36,000 square foot building, which was built in 1965, was purchased for $2 million last year by a Rockland County, N.Y.-based limited liability company, 1930 Silas Deane LLC.

American Freight is owned by an Ohio-based holding company, Franchise Group, whose brand portfolio includes The Vitamin Shoppe and Pet Supplies Plus.
