Leonard Raymond Farber MD, 83, of Branford, CT died on April 12th at Artis House in Branford, CT following a long illness. He was the son of Violet and Morris Farber, both deceased. He attended public school in Forest Hills, NY. He received his BA at Colgate University in 1961 and his medical degree at the State University New York Downstate Medical School in 1965 where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society for distinguished academic achievement.

Len was a medical Intern and Resident at Boston City Hospital under the tutelage of Dr. Franz Inglefinger. He received his oncology training at Yale New Haven Medical Center. He was the Founder and President of Medical Oncology and Hematology, PC, a private practice group that ultimately included many doctors throughout CT.

He was the Executive Director of Father McGivney Cancer Center at the Hospital of St. Raphael for several years. He was a Senior Attending Physician of Medical Oncology and Hematology, PC in Hamden, CT. Len was the first author or co-author of many professional articles, book chapters and reviews related to cancer treatment. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and of Medical Oncology. He was a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and the Connecticut Oncology Association.

Len enjoyed traveling to far flung parts of the world, including Venezuela, Nepal and Tibet, where he volunteered his medical expertise to patients who did not have access to trained hematologists or oncologists. He also helped train medical personnel in those counties and maintained connections with them when he returned home.

Whether in CT or abroad, Len loved being a physician and enjoyed providing the best care for his patients. He was a particularly warm and devoted physician, well loved by his many patients and admired by fellow physicians who worked with him.

Throughout his life, Len’s other passion was golf. He played for the Colgate Golf Team and was a long term member of the Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club in Branford. One of his two major major golf achievements came when he was 74 years old and shot his age. The other was in 2016 when he scored a hole-in-one, which, luckily for him, was verified by another player who witnessed his ball going into the hole.

Len was an avid theater goer and loved attending both Broadway and offBroadway theater in New York City. He enjoyed local theater as well, attending both Yale Repertory Theater and Long Wharf theater productions.

He was married for 60 years to his loving wife Stephanie Solomon Farber. They had two children, Lauren Vicky, who died in 2013 and Paul Solomon (Halle) of Teaneck, NJ, both of whom Len adored. He is also survived by his three amazing grandchildren, Zachary Owen Miller, Rebecca Eve Miller and Risa Miriam Farber and his sister Joyce Esposito.
