City home to 2 Peruvian restaurants a mile apart

- By Nick Sambides

MILFORD — In what some experts said could be the start of a trend, Milford’s second Peruvian restaurant has opened in the city’s Devon section, about a mile from another eatery specializing in that country’s fare.

Pollo a la Brasa, a takeout featuring Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken, opened at 361 Bridgeport Ave. last month. Milford’s Costa Peru, is the city’s second Peruvian restaurant and set to open on April 15, owner Kevin Inahuazo said.

Costa is at 333 Naugatuck Ave., and Inahuazo said he wouldn’t be surprised if more Peruvian fare was headed Milford’s way.

“I believe there is a possibility that yes, more business owners will come to Milford just because it is situated in a good place, right by the beach and close to some other places” that serve Peruvian fare, Inahuazo said.

“It’s just an up-and-coming culinary delight for diners is what it comes down to,” said Simon McDonald, director of membership and marketing at the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce. “It is new flavors that people haven’t experienced before and they’re enjoying, so these restaurants are popping up all over the place.”

Peruvian restaurants have been successful in Bridgeport and Stratford. Inahuazo open Costa Peru in the Naugatuck Avenue space because it is less than a dozen miles from Cibus Latin Fusion, El Sabor Latino and Palacio Latino of Stratford. All are Peruvian.

The newly-opened Pollo a la Brasa features 14 chicken dishes ranging in price from $12 to $32; five chicken sandwiches ranging from $11 to $13; two full-roasted chickens $15 and $18; and 14 other chicken plates served with various forms of chicken-fried rice, breaded chicken and salads or fries.

It also has four ceviche dishes; another dozen fried fish meals and steak sandwiches. Its owners did not return telephone calls made Thursday and Friday.
