Kurt Robert Volk
April 10, 2024
Kurt Robert Volk of Branford died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at his home. Mr. Volk was born in Greenwich, CT on February 24, 1959, son of Norma Gomer Volk of Woodbury, CT, and the late Kurt E. Volk, Jr. From a young age, he loved the outdoors, from climbing trees, to hiking in the mountains with his mother, to spending time on his grandfather’s boat fishing. After graduating from Staples High School in Westport, CT, he attended Clark University, receiving a B.A. in Intellectual History and English. Mr. Volk dedicated his professional career to the Kurt H. Volk Printing Company in Milford, first starting in maintenance in high school, joining the Washington D.C District sales team after college, and succeeding his father as president in the early 1990s. As president, Mr. Volk was instrumental in marrying digital high speed printing with personalized products, which revolutionized the sales and marketing industry. Mr. Volk was deeply involved with the Master Printers of America and created their Sales and Marketing Conference. More than this, Mr. Volk was proud of the large family legacy this company held and in particular, its community of employees, and the company’s role as a facilitator of the written word. After his retirement, Kurt focused on numerous projects, training his dog, Sunny, to become a licensed therapy dog, volunteering as an aid at his daughters’ elementary school, and continuing to work on his boat and vintage Porsche. Most of all, he was a proud father and enjoyed sharing his interests and knowledge with his daughters. Teaching them fractions by splitting up cookies, beginning their Shakespearean education as toddlers, and passing on his father’s love of cards, he was a teacher to everyone he met. In addition to his daughters, Sarah and Hannah Volk, he is survived by his mother, Norma Volk, his sister, Diane (Erik) Johnson, his nephew, Bryan Johnson, his niece, Kirsten Johnson, and several cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Friday afternoon, April 19th, from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m., with “Words of Remembrance” at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 East Main Street, Branford, CT 06405.
