HENDLER, ERNESTO “ERNIE” DANILO

-

Ernesto “Ernie” Danilo Hendler passed away peacefully in New Haven on Friday, August 3, 2018. He was born on October 24, 1935 in San Martin, Mendoza in Argentina to Rosa Rodolfina Reta and Nathan Hendler. Although he was an only child, he grew up in a very large and loving family of many uncles, aunts and cousins. With the rising of the Peronist party in the late 1940’s, and the attendant uncertainty of the fate of the universities in Argentina, Ernie decided to expedite his education, graduating from secondary school early. At the age of 16, he entered the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine, from where he would later graduate. While there, Ernie would meet his future wife, Rosa Emma Ganopol, who like him had entered medical school early. They were inseparable, taking their classes together, studying together and doing their residencies together in Mar del Plata, Argentina. On April 29, 1962, Ernie and Rosa were married. A few years later, in 1966, they moved to the United States, where they did residencies in the Washington D.C. area. In 1968, they settled with their two children in Connecticut, where they lived happily ever since. Ernie and Rosa enjoyed traveling the world, and spending time with family and friends. He was also devoted to his Boca Juniors and Argentine-national football teams. Ernie practiced medicine at West Haven Veterans Hospital and at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was also a professor of the medical school. His professional success can be measured by the various recognitions he has received, including Fellowship in the American College of Physicians and the James P Colangelo, M.D. Achievement Award, and by the many veterans and other patients he helped. His more gratifying personal success can be measured by the devotion of his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years (and soul mate of 67 years), Rosa; sons, Fernando and Pablo (Susan); and grandchildren, Alejandro, Lucas, Marcos and Antonio.

The family will receive friends at the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place, New Haven, on Monday, August 6, 2018 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Beaverdale Memorial Park, 90 Pine Rock Avenue, New Haven. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Share a memory and sign Ernie’s guest book online at www.iovanne.com
