Richard James Murphy, Sr., of New Haven, CT passed away peacefully on November 16, 2018 at Trustbridg­e Hospice Care in Delray Beach, Florida with his family by his side. He is survived by and was the loving and caring husband of 55 years to Kathleen Massa Murphy. He was the loving father to Richard (Mary Clare) Murphy, Jr. and Scott (Sharon) Murphy. He was the proud and adoring grandfathe­r to Ryan, Kayla, Ricky, Terence and Isabella Murphy. Brother of Kathryn (the late Michael) DeMaio, Joseph (Fran) Murphy, Lucille (Charles) Martindale, and Marie (Phillip) Wipperman. He is also survived by many loving and caring friends in Delray Beach, FL and New Haven, CT. Rich was born on June 13, 1939 to the late Joseph and Lucille Murphy. He grew up on Legion Avenue in New Haven where he excelled at basketball and his studies while a student at Hillhouse High School. He met his lifelong partner, Kathleen, at the tender age of 16 and after an 8 year romance they married on September 7, 1963. Rich was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfathe­r, brother and friend. He especially adored being with his five grandchild­ren whenever the opportunit­y arose. Profession­ally he worked for many years as a Parts Manager at Cooley Chevrolet and Bob Matick Chevrolet. He started his own business in 1988 as the successful owner of RAP Auto Parts in Middletown, CT for many years. Rich enjoyed being with his friends at the Pines of Delray, Campania Club, the Alpha Club, Scungilli Internatio­nal and the Birthday Club. He was an avid golfer and a member at Grassy Hill and Oak Lane Country Clubs. Rich also volunteere­d much of his time to family, friends and charitable associatio­ns, always willing to help whomever and whenever needed. His sly smile that held a twinkle in his deep blue eyes will be missed by all that knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Monday November 26th at 10 a.m. in Saints Aedan and Brendan Church, 112 Fountain St, New Haven, CT. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
