Magpie to play at Folk Fridays
NEW HAVEN — Magpie will return to CT Folk’s Folk Fridays series, performing acoustic music on Friday in the First Presbyterian Church Hall at 704 Whitney Ave.
Tickets are $25 at the door or $20 ($10 for students) in advance at ctfolk.com. Advance tickets are available until 3 p.m. the day of the show.
Magpie, with a career spanning more than 40 years, is Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner. They began playing together in Kent, Ohio, in September of 1973, moved to Washington, D.C., the following year, then, many years later, moved to upstate New York where they live now.
Over the years, Magpie has played around the world, performing everything from traditional songs to vintage blues, swing, country and folk classics on guitars, mandolin, harmonica, dulcimer and concertina, along with vocal harmonies.
Leonino grew up listening to the music of her family, both the Italian music played by her paternal grandfather and the country and jazz sung by her mother and her aunts and cousins on her mother’s side of the family.
She is an accomplished jazz and blues singer and is equally comfortable with traditional folk and contemporary songs. She plays harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer and rhythm guitar.
Artzner grew up listening and singing along to folk music on records. The music of the folk revival of the ’50s and ’60s caught his ear and imagination, and he took up guitar, learning both the music and its roots as he honed his ability as a finger-style guitarist.
