Al and Doris Turbeville, of Orange, celebrate 75 years

-

Al and Doris Turbeville of Orange will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary on Tuesday. Al and Doris met in Orangeburg, S.C., during World War II, in a small pharmacy where Doris was a soda fountain attendant.

Al was flying in Stearman PT-17 biplanes in the Army Air Corps, teaching American and French cadets how to fly in the small town of Orangeburg at the time. Many of these cadets flew missions over Germany in the war. After the war ended, the flying school and airfield closed down.

Shortly after that, Al’s family was in the New Haven area so they wanted to settle close to them, so Al and Doris moved to Connecticut. Al had told his wife, “wait till you taste the tomato pies in New Haven” (referring to Pepe’s on Wooster Street). She wasn’t thrilled with the idea.

Al and Doris will celebrate the anniversary with their four children — Betty Morgan of Framingham, Mass.; Susan Cline of Ashby, Mass.; Allen Robert Turbeville of Derby; and John Turbeville of Stratford — and their families, and Jane Montgomery of Milford, Al’s sister. They have always been the best parents and grandparents anyone could imagine and provided a lifetime of wonderful memories.
