Yale opens Ivy play with win

Alex Copeland scored 14 points, three others had 11 and Yale held off Brown 70-67 on Saturday for its seventh straight win as both teamed opened Ivy League play in Providence, R.I.

Copeland hit 1 of 2 free throws to put Yale ahead 68-62 with 52 seconds left but Brown scored five straight to get within one point with 15 seconds left. Miye Oni gave Yale a threepoint lead with a dunk and Zach Hunsaker was off on a 3-pointer before the buzzer for Brown.

Blake Reynolds, Oni and Paul Atkinson each scored 11 for Yale (11-3) and Jordan Bruner grabbed 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs, who are on their longest winning streak since the 2015-16 team won 12 straight, have also won 10 of their last 11.

Niagara 75, Quinnipiac 72: At Hamden, Marvin Prochet tied his career high with 24 points with four 3-pointers and Niagara beat Quinnipiac to end a twogame skid and win its first conference road game.

Chris Barton added 14 points and Raheem Solomon 12 for the Purple Eagles (9-10, 2-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), who outshot the Bobcats 52 percent to 43 percent and made 11 of 19 from behind the arc (58 percent).

The Bobcats scored seven straight for a 32-26 lead on Cameron Young's 3, but Niagara closed on a 7-2 run and trailed 37-35 at halftime. Kelly scored 14 points and Young 11 for Quinnipiac, which shot 40 percent in the half. Young scored 24 points and Kelly had 20 with six 3s and eight assists for Qunnipiac (8-9, 3-3). Tyrese Williams added 11.

Stonehill 85, SCSU 78: Will Moreton had 26 points and Owen Chose added 21 to lead Stonehill to its win in North Easton, Massachuse­tts.

All five Owls starters scored in double figures led by Isaiah McLeod who had 19 points. Luke Beesley added 15.

New Haven 92, Bentley 80: Elijah Bailey scored 26 points and added seven rebounds and Derrick Rowland added 21 points to lead the Chargers to their Northeast-10 Conference win over Bentley in Waltham, Massachuse­tts.

Albertus Magnus 84, Colby-Sawyer 81: Davon Warner had 22 points and six rebounds to lead the Falcons to their Great Northeast Athletic Conference win in New London, New Hampshire.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SCSU 73, Stonehill 69: Amanda Pfohl of Trumbull had 24 points to lead the Owls to their Northeast-10 Conference win in North Easton, Massachuse­tts. Kiana Steinauer set a school record in steals with 10 and had 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for (11-7, 5-5) and Allie Smith of Danbury added 17 points for the Owls.

No. 16/17 Bentley 50, New Haven 42: Marissa Fontaine had 11 points and Amy McConnell and Katie Meriggioli added 10 each to lead Bentley to its Northeast-10 Conference win in Waltham, Massachuse­tts.

Alexandria Kerr led the Chargers with 12 points and four assists and Micah Wormack added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Chargers.

Albertus Magnus 78, Colby-Sawyer 75: A career-high 41 points from junior guard Shyla Osmond of New Haven and a double-double from Rah Rah Thompson of Bridgeport helped the Falcons rally from a 10-point halftime deficit to their GNAC win in New London, New Hampshire.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

St. Lawrence 5, Yale 1: Kalie Grant scored twice and Grace Harrison had 32 saves to lead St. Lawrence to its ECAC win in Canton, New York. Kayla Nielsen added a goal and an assist for St. Lawrence (10-11-2, 5-5-1). Claire Dalton scored for the Bulldogs (5-13, 4-7) and Gianna Meloni and Kyra O’Brien combined for 30 saves.
