Gilbert edges Montville for Class S wrestling crown

Gilbert won three weight classes, all by decision, to edge out Montville for the Class S state wrestling title Saturday night at Windham.

Nick Barber won the 138-pound class with a 4-2 decision over Stonington’s Samual Light, Kyle Matthews won at 152 over Montville’s Ian Anderson 9-3 and Alex Smith won at 170 with a 4-1 decision over Granby’s Tyler Perez to help Gilbert finish with 193.5 points. Montville finished with 190 points and Haddam-Killingworth was third at 162.

Morgan’s Louis Bradley won the 138 class, edging Gilbert’s Devin Matthews 8-7. Haddam-Killingworth’s pinned St. Paul’s Ben Foligno in 23 seconds to win the 220 class.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morgan 51, Portland 39: Catie Donadio finished with 13 points for Morgan (15-6) in a Shoreline Conference tournament quarterfinal at Clinton. Kaitlin Capello led all scorers with 20 points for Portland (11-10).

East Hampton 43, North Branford 32: Lindsay Orbann had 19 points for East Hampton in a Shoreline tournament home win. Jesse Kilburn had 11 points to lead North Branford.

Holy Cross 60, Seymour 53: Jalin Waters scored 15 points for Holy Cross (16-5) in an NVL tournament quarterfinal. Kolby Sirowich led Seymour (13-8) with 12 points.
