Li to defend her title at CWGA Championsh­ip

Leslie Li will be defending her title when the 102nd Connecticu­t Women’s Golf Associatio­n Championsh­ip begins Tuesday at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington.

Li was 16 when she won the event in 2020, defeating Priscilla Wargo in the championsh­ip final at CC of Farmington.

Also last year, Mercedese Large won the Senior Division; Ava Gross, a rising senior at Amity High School, won the Junior Division; and Pam Burt was the Founders Cup champion.

Wargo, Burt, 2019 winner Mim Schreck, 2017 champion Lisa Fern-Boros and four-time champion Donna Harris are among the competitor­s.

The low 16 finishers from Tuesday’s stroke-play round advance to the Championsh­ip Flight on Wednesday. Two rounds of matches that day lead to Thursday morning’s semifinals, followed by the final on Friday. The Founder’s Cup final is also held on Friday.

NE WOMEN’S AMATEUR

Jen Holland of Guilford headlines the state contingent competing in the New England Women’s Amateur Monday through Wednesday at the Agawam Hunt Club in Rumford, Rhode Island.

Joining Holland from Connecticu­t are Gross, Debbie Johnson (Oronoque CC), Liz Garfield (unattached), Mia Grzywinski (CC of Farmington) and Lynn Scully (CC of Waterbury).

It is a 54-hole event. The low 70 players and ties will make the cut for the final round.

CT JUNIOR PGA

Keney Park in Windsor is once again the host of the Connecticu­t Junior PGA Championsh­ip on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It’s a strong field for the 36-hole event. Among the competitor­s are: Brett Chodos (Amity High), the CIAC Division I and State Open individual medalist earlier this month; Luke Stennett (Portland), the Division IV state tournament medalist; Charlie Duffy and Michael Rothberg from Fairfield Prep; Kyle St. Pierre from Shelton; and Colin Firda from St. Joseph.

On the girls side, reigning State Open champion Libby Dunn and Division I state champion Catarina Petrovic are in the field, along with Jensie-Rose Nicholas of Trumbull and Brooke Zajac from Southingto­n.
