Jan “John” Miedzinski

-

Jan “John” Miedzinski, 83, of New Haven, CT, passed away peacefully in his home on February 17, 2022. Despite a long history of heart disease, he was still very active, and his death was unexpected. Born in Przytuly, Poland on June 25, 1938, Jan was the son of the late Zygmunt and Stanislawa Najmula Miedzinski. He was the husband of Krystyna Fekieta Miedzinski, the loving father of Irene (John) Liebler and Andrew (Daria) Miedzinski, and proud grandfather of Olivia and Jack Liebler, and Stefan Miedzinski. He was predeceased by his sister Alina Szczubelek. In 1939, when Jan was just a year old, his father, Zygmunt Miedzinski was captured and taken to a Gulag prison camp in Siberia during the Soviet invasion of Poland during WWII. It wasn’t until 18 years later, in 1957, that Jan and his mother, Stanislawa, immigrated to the United States where they were reunited with Zygmunt, who had gained citizenship to the U.S. after the war. They lived in Branford until 1962, when they moved to Orange Street in New Haven. Jan was trained as a tailor in Poland and worked for several New Haven clothing stores including Gentry’s, Backer’s, and Macy’s. Later in life, he became well known as New Haven’s “neighborhood tailor,” working out of his own tailor shop. Jan traveled

to many faraway places with his wife, Krystyna, and their friends, including Greece, Hawaii, and Alaska. When he wasn’t tinkering in his shed or tailor shop, he enjoyed walking, fishing, or just sitting out in the sun listening to music. His warm smile will be missed.

Visiting hours will be Monday evening, February 21, from 4-7 p.m., in the Lupinski Funeral Home, Inc., 821 State St., New Haven.
