Yale lacrosse returns, wins season opener

Returning to Reese Stadium after 33 months away, the No. 7 Yale men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 17-14 victory over No. 20 Villanova on Saturday in New Haven

Matt Brandau led the way for the Bulldogs with six points on five goals and an assist.

The two teams traded big quarters with Villanova leading at the half, 8-7, but Yale exploded with a 9-1 frame in the third and held off the Wildcats late as both teams endured snow squalls and high winds for much of the game.

Leo Johnson added three goals for Yale, while Will Cabrera and Brad Sharp had two goals apiece.

Brown 19, Quinnipiac 13: At Providence, R.I., Steve Germain finished with four goals and two assists for the Bobcats in a non-conference loss.

Ryan Donnery added three goals for Quinnipiac (1-2). Darian Cook led Brown (1-0) with four goals and four assists.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

New Haven 74, Adelphi 62: At Garden City, N.Y., Tavin Pierre-Phillipe scored 19 points as the Chargers won their sixth straight to wrap up the regular season.

Davontrey Thomas added 14 points for UNH (17-7, 13-6 NE-10).

Ronnie Silva led all scorers with 25 points for Adelphi (17-9, 11-6 NE-10).

Saint Rose 93, SCSU 61: At Albany, N.Y., Lyron Bennett lead the Owls (7-16, 4-13 NE-10) with 16 points in an NE-10 loss.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Quinnipiac 76, Niagara 57: At Hamden, Mackenzie DeWees finished with 24 points to lead the Bobcats to a MAAC win.

Cur’Tiera Haywood added 15 points for Quinnipiac (16-9, 11-5 MAAC), while Mikala Morris had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Angel Parker led Niagara (12-13, 9-8 MAAC) with 30 points.

Princeton 74, Yale 36: At Princeton, N.J., Camilla Emsbo had a teamhigh 11 points for the Bulldogs (14-10, 7-5 Ivy) in a loss.

Kaitlyn Chen and Abby Meyers scored 14 points apiece for Princeton (19-4, 11-0 Ivy).

Adelphi 52, New Haven 49: At Garden City, N.Y., Aurora Deshaies scored 22 points in the Chargers’ NE-10 loss.

Brie Pergola added 11 points for UNH (9-15, 4-14 NE-10).

SCSU 55, Saint Rose 46: At Albany, N.Y., Jessica Fressle scored 22 points to lead the Owls to an NE-10 win.

Zoe Amalbert added 15 points for SCSU (11-12, 8-9 NE-10).

MEN’S HOCKEY SUNY Canton 5, Albertus Magnus 2:

at Springfiel­d, Mass., Cameron

Weitzman and Ryan Malko scored, but the Falcons fell in the GNAC Commission­er’s Cup championsh­ip game.

Logan Bateman concluded his junior campaign with a 16-6-1 record after tallying 23 saves.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

No. 6 Yale 3, Princeton 0: At Princeton, N.J., Pia Dukaric finished with 23 saves as the Bulldogs wrapped up the best regular season in program history.

Charlotte Welch, Claire Dalton and Elle Hartje all scored for Yale (22-6-1, 16-5-1 ECAC).

Princeton fell to 11-13-5 (9-10-3 ECAC)

Brown 1, No. 9 Quinnipiac 0: At Hamden, the Bobcats outshot the Bears 36-13, but came up empty in an ECAC loss.

Logan Angers made 12 saves for Quinnipiac (23-8-3, 15-7-0 ECAC).

Maya Mangiafico netted the lone goal for Brown (6-18-5, 6-12-4 ECAC), while Kaley Doyle made 36 saves.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Yale 15, Sacred Heart 4: At New Haven, Fallon Vaughn and Bri Carraquill­o scored three goals apiece as the Bulldogs won their season opener.

Quinnipiac 9, LIU 8: At Brookevill­e, N.Y., Desiree Kleberg scored three times and Kat Henselder made seven saves as the Bobcats won their season opener.
