Asking the divine question

- By Alfred D. Watts Alfred Watts is pastor at Cornerstone Christian Center in Milford.

My son, Avery, will graduate from high school this year and has committed to playing football at Southern Connecticut State University. Go Owls!

Recently, I attempted to get Avery an audience with one of my football heroes. I offered to go anywhere in the country to meet with him for an hour and then fly back home. I knew that it was a long shot to think that this icon would meet with us, but I figured it did not hurt to ask.

You cannot imagine how elated I was when Il earned that he agreed to the meeting. I was blessed to know that someone who is so busy would take out time to be with us.

One day, I was thinking about the meeting with excitement and anticipation in my heart. I was considering all the questions I would ask, and the insight Avery and I would gain. Suddenly, God spoke to my heart and asked, “Alfred, do you still get this excited to meet with Me?”

I was convicted.

I had to admit that while I love spending daily time with God and gain so much from being with Him, I could not remember the last time I was as excited to meet with God as I was to meet with my football hero. I realized I had begun taking for granted the fact that, through Jesus Christ, I have the privilege of meeting daily with Almighty

God who is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. He is never too busy for me, and I do not have to travel any distance to meet with Him: He is as close as the mention of His name. Best of all, He can provide me with all the guidance and resources I need for my son’s future — and longs to do so!

While I am still excited about meeting with my football hero, I am reminded that nothing compares

to a daily meeting with God.

Do you spend time with God daily in prayer? If not, I encourage you to begin doing so. God has wisdom and guidance for your success that He reveals only through prayer. Spending time with God in prayer will bless your life and quickly become the best part of your day.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’” — Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV)
