Marjorie “Marge” Calvert passed away the morning of June 18th at the age of 98 in Berkeley, California where she had been living in the loving home of her middle son, David and his wife Nancy since February, 2017. Having moved to Clinton with husband William (Bill) in 1980, Marge had remained in her home for 8 years following Bill's passing in February, 2009 until her move to California. Marge remained in relatively good health until just a couple of weeks before her passing, managing to take short walks with walker assistance daily, keeping track of current events in the news, enjoying favorite movies and opera DVDs, and enjoying frequent visits from the many family members who live near the Bay Area. Marge is survived by her three sons, Steven (Patti) of Bristol, RI, David (Nancy Hodgson) of Berkeley, CA and Richard (Anne) of Branford, CT; grandchildren Matthew, Ted (Amy), Nicholas (Sharne), Amelia (Thomas Gianetti), Tiffany (Josh Azzarella), Elizabeth Siddon (Christopher), Rebecca, Daniel (Deanna), Aliza (Ryan Battisto); step-grandchildren Sara Mains (Cindy Race), Liza and Eric Scaff, Andrew Mains, Peter Mains; and great-grandchildren Luke (Elizabeth's), Esme (Tiffany's); Giovanni and Isabella (Matt's), Janie Grace and Sam (Ted's), Dylan and Aidan (Liza's), Perry, Rion, Simon and Francis (Andrew's), Avery, Marcus and Andrew (Peter's), Daisy and Lucian (Amelia's); Clara and Lainey (Dan's), and Brett and Luca (Aliza's); nieces Margaret Avery (Bruce), Sarah Calvert, Catherine Calvert, Virginia Calvert (Robert Dean); nephew, Robert Calvert (Barbara); and several grandnieces and nephews.

Marge was born on September 25, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Edith (Macintosh) Horstman and grew up in Rockville Centre,

Long Island, NY where she met her future husband, Bill. She graduated from Skidmore College, and married Bill in 1945 just prior to his discharge from the Navy at the end of WWII. Following Bill's discharge from the Navy they moved to Cedar Grove, NJ and then Westfield, NJ, moving to Clinton, CT in 1980 upon Bill's retirement.

Marge's life was remarkable for her resilience as a child and her notable achievements throughout her life. Following her children's secondary school years, Marge completed her Master of Library Science degree and worked in that profession until retiring in 1980. She remained active through volunteer work with Literacy Volunteers and the Democratic Town Committee, singing in the chorus of the Opera Theater of CT, and avidly supporting the Henry Carter Hull Library. She was a passionate voter and advocate for civil liberties, finding relaxation in going to the town beach, attending and listening to opera, and gardening, still adding to her rose garden until shortly before her move to California.

A memorial service will be private. Charitable donations in Marge's memory may be made to the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society, 297 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443; to Opera Theater of Connecticut, P.O. Box 733, Clinton, CT 06413; or to the Henry Carter Hull Library, 10 Killingworth Turnpike, Clinton, CT 06413.
