Lionel S. Jackson, Jr, former CEO and Publisher of the New Haven Register and New Haven Journal-Courier Newspapers, passed peacefully in West Palm Beach, Florida, on July 7, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Josette Gilbert Jackson, his two daughters, Jennifer Jackson Breitling and Laura Day Gaczkowski, two stepchildr­en, Frederick Joseph Morelli III and Jennifer Morelli Pennette, and eight grandchild­ren and his two sisters, Sheila Leach and Suzanne Cartier. Stewart was the son of Lionel S. Jackson and Patricia Woolsey Jackson of New Haven, CT. He had a passion for the water, was a rower who competed in the Royal Hanley Regatta recently celebratin­g his Monmouth school team’s 50th anniversar­y of rowing at Henley. As well he competitiv­ely raced Cigarette Power Boats throughout the Americas. After graduation from the University of Pennsylvan­ia, he ultimately joined his father at the newspapers, and upon his father’s retirement, assumed his father’s responsibi­lities. In 1991, Stewart and Josie followed their passion for yachting, blue water sailing, and exploratio­n (both having become US Coast Guard Captains) and sailed their vessel, LEQUIPE to Thailand and Malaysia, living onboard for 10 years. Upon returning to the USA, they became avid croquet players and settled in East Hampton, NY, where Stewart had spent his summers as a youth and in West Palm Beach, FL. Stewart served as Chairman of the Croquet Committee at the Beach Club, as well as serving on the Board of Directors. He was also responsibl­e for bringing one of the largest invitation­al croquet tournament­s in the country to the Club. Peaceful sailing, Captain, on your next journey.
