Michigan rallies without Hart to down Indiana

-

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Cornelius Johnson’s 29-yard touchdown catch midway through the third quarter Saturday gave No. 4 Michigan the lead and the jolt it needed to pull away from Indiana 31-10 in an emotional game in which a Wolverines’ coach was taken to a hospital.

Michigan improved to 6-0 for the second straight season, the first time they’ve achieved that feat since 1976-77.

Johnson’s big play came after assistant coach Mike Hart was carted off the field in the first quarter for an undisclosed medical issue.

Hart went down unexpectedly after Indiana tied the score at 7. Many Wolverines players dropped to one knee while coach Jim Harbaugh and other assistants watched trainers tend to Michigan’s running game coordinator.

The emotional toll appeared to hurt the defending Big Ten champs, who went into the locker room tied at 10 with the Hoosiers (3-3, 1-2).

But after hearing Hart talk to the team at halftime, the Wolverines (3-0 Big Ten) promised to win the game for their coach — and they didn’t disappoint.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Hendon Hooker passed for two touchdowns, Jabari Small ran for 127 yards and two scores, and Tennessee punished LSU for its mistakes and risk-taking.

A morning kickoff lured LSU fans to Tigers Stadium considerably earlier than usual — and many were gone by the end of the third quarter, when Tennessee led 37-7.

The Volunteers (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) matched their best start to a season since 2016 with balance on offense, sound defense that corralled dualthreat LSU QB Jayden Daniels, and opportunistic special teams play.

Hooker passed for 239 yards, with scoring passes of 45 and 14 yards to Jalin Hyatt. The fleet-footed QB also accounted for 56 of Tennessee’s 264 yards on the ground. Bru McCoy caught seven passes for 140 yards, drawing howls of “Bruuuuuuu!” from a sizeable contingent of fans in Volunteer orange.

Those fans’ repeated singing of “Good ol’ Rocky Top” echoed throughout LSU’s Death Valley by game’s end.

NO. 17 TCU 36, NO. 19 KANSAS 31

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Max Duggan passed for three touchdowns in the second half, including the winning 24-yarder to Quintin Johnston with 1:36 left.

The Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) are out to their best start since 2017 after winning the matchup of surprise unbeatens.

Duggan was 23 of 33 for 308 yards and outdueled Kansas backup quarterback Jason Bean in a wild second half. Jalon Daniels, who led the Jayhawks to five straight wins for their best start since 2009, suffered an apparent injury to his right (throwing) shoulder late in the first half.

Bean, who started the first 10 games last season, was 16 of 24 for 262 yards and he became the first Kansas quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in a half since Todd Reesling in 2008.

After combining for just 13 points in the first half, the teams combined for 42 in the third quarter.
