UNH upended in playoff opener

Ronnie Brown scored on a pair of long touchdown runs as Shepherd beat New Haven 16-13 to end the Chargers' season in the first round of the Division II playoffs on Saturday in Shepherdst­own, W.V.

Brown finished with 223 yards on the ground for Shepherd (11-1) including touchdown runs of 61 yards and 47 yards.

New Haven (8-3) scored with 2:15 remaining on a Dante DeLorenzo 2-yard catch to make it a onescore game, but the Shepherd offense was able to run out the clock.

Quarterbac­k Connor Degenhardt had a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown for UNH, while Christophe­r Ais rushed for a eam-high 77 yards.

Long Island 37, Sacred Heart 34: At Fairfield, Luca Stanzani threw four touchdowns and ran for another and Long Island ended its season holding off Sacred Heart.

Long Island built a 37-10 lead when Stanzani ran it from 13 yards out with 3:32 left in the third quarter.

Stanzani, a true freshman from Clearwater, Florida, helped boost the Sharks' (4-7, 4-3) fortunes when he took over as the starting quarterbac­k a month ago and ignited a four-game winning streak.

Malik Grant finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns and 110 yards on the ground for the Pioneers (5-6, 3-4).

CCSU 39, Stonehill 13:

At North Easton, Mass., Nasir Smith rushed for a career-high 218 yards and secured the Northeast Conference rushing title in the Blue Devils' win.

Smith carried 29 times and scored four touchdowns.

Smith's 1,219 rushing yards is the most for any NEC running back this season. He finished with 14 total touchdowns, tied for tops in the NEC, with his 13 rushing scores the most in the league.
