Albert R. Powers Sr.

-

Albert R. Powers, Sr. passed away on January 2, 2023 after a long illness. He was born on November 16, 1929 in New Haven, CT to Margaret E. Lee and Daniel F. O’Mara.

Al graduated from Commercial High School and went on to proudly serve in the Naval Reserve. He was stationed at the Navy yard in Brooklyn, N.Y. on the U.S.S. Tawara in the early 1950’s and served in Cuba. He met the love of his life and future bride, Louise D’Amico, through his best friend (and her brother) Frankie D’Amico at her home. He said he loved her “the moment he laid eyes on her.” He married Louise while on leave on January 20, 1951 on a beautiful spring like day that was also Louise’s mother’s birthday. Al worked for UPS and then Conrail/Amtrak for over 35 years until his retirement.

He had an incredible memory and being a true Irishman, he was a great story teller. He loved to tell stories about his time in the Navy and working for Amtrak. One of his favorite stories was about a boxcar, a split watermelon, a rickety wooden wagon, and a New Haven cop.

Al’s hobby was collecting antique clocks and with his son Robert fully restoring his 1931 Ford Model A. He loved cars, reading, watching movies, and listening to music (especially ABBA.) He had a green thumb and anything he planted would grow. He had the ability to fix almost anything. He adored his family and if anyone ever needed anything, he never said no. He was always willing to help.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years Louise (D’Amico) Powers, his children Albert Powers, Jr., Margaret Powers, Donna Powers, Robert Powers (Charyn), Roberta Pyne ( Joseph), seven grandchildren, Dr. Albert Powers III (Dr. Emily), Daniel Powers ( Jillian), Megan Scotto (Antonio), Briana Lingo (Samuel), Dr. Louisa Powers, Dr. David Powers, Nathen Powers, and eight great grandchildren, Jack Scotto, Lily Powers, Adelaide Powers, Jane Powers, Maston Powers, Will Scotto, Beckett Lingo, and Miles Lingo. He is predeceased by his daughter-in-law Mary Maturo Powers.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday Jan. 9, 2023 at 10:00 am. In St. Anthony Church, 70 Washington Ave, New Haven. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Ave. North Haven.
