Alfonso Vaughn, Sr., affectiona­tely known as Uncle Al, was born on May 18, 1931, in Ansonia, CT to the late John Pedro Vaughn and Lottie Mae Hilton. He quietly transition­ed in his sleep to be with the Lord on the evening of Thursday, January 12, 2023.

After graduating from James Hillhouse High School, Al enlisted in the U.S. Army. He proudly served during the Korean War, as a member of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. This was the second installmen­t of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, which was the all-black paratroope­rs known as The Historical Triple Nickels.

Alfonso worked at Winchester Repeating Arms Company as a Machinist. He then went on to become a Diesel Technician for MetroNorth Railroad, retiring after 25 years. He proudly served as the Commander of the Charles W. Woods VFW Post 10321 in Hamden, CT.

His life will forever be cherished by his wife, Edwina Collins-Vaughn; daughters, Tanya Vaughn, Tracy Lawrence (Karl), and Karen Vaughn-Clary ( Jason); sister, Queen Patterson; grandchild­ren, Carlton, Tristian, Jade, and Cameron; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He was predecease­d by his parents,

John Pedro Vaughn and Lottie Hilton; son, Alfonso Derek Vaughn; sisters, Sudie Grant and Mary Clarke; and brothers, John Edward Vaughn, William Alvin Vaughn, and Ralph Vaughn.

He also cherished his confidants, Hilda Charlotte Giles Vaughn Lawhorn and Jacquelyn Vaughn-Haywood.

Visitation will take place Thursday, January 26th from 12pm - 2pm at Howard K. Hill Funeral Services 1287 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06511. A celebratio­n of his life will take place Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 9:00 AM at Varick Memorial AME Zion Church, 242 Dixwell Ave, New Haven, CT 06511.
