-

Barbara Sue (Schpero) Abrams, 71, of Wappingers Falls, NY, formerly of Milford, CT, died at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Jan. 26, 2023. Born in Derby, CT, Jan. 30, 1951, Barbara was the daughter of the late Arthur K. and Jean (Blume) Schpero. Beloved mother of Lauren (Fabio) Abrams and Jessica (Kevin) Prue. Dear sister of Edward Schpero and Fred (Nancy) Schpero. Cherished grandma Bebe to Lydia Jean Prue. Loving aunt to Kim (Cliff) Snider, Erika (Rocco) D’Eugenio, Danny (Bree) Schpero, Becca (Corey) Friedman, and Scott (Lauren) Schpero. She is also survived by many cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and countless friends who she considered family.

Barbara graduated from Amity High School (Class of 68’) before attending Southern Connecticut State University (Class of 73’) where she received her bachelor’s degree in higher education. It was here that she also continued her post-graduate studies, receiving a master’s degree in Speech Pathology. Barbara went on to serve as an educator in the West Haven public school system for over 30 years before her retirement in June of 2008.

Barbara had a passion for the arts, specifically the performing arts, having been a proud member of the Yankee Maids Chorus of Sweet Adelines International for many years. Singing was one of her true passions and it brought her, and those around her, a special joy. She enjoyed writing and was especially interested in syntax and sentence structure, the beauty of how words and rhythm blended together. There wasn’t an occasion that she wouldn’t have a poem prepared, be it birthdays, anniversaries, or just to brighten someone’s day. She always wanted to stay active in contributing to the education of children, and therefore, was an avid volunteer reader at the Milford Public Library.

She loved to travel and was grateful to have visited numerous destinations across the globe throughout the years. A few of her favorite stops along the way were Italy, Paris, Tel Aviv, Spain, and the Galapagos Islands. However, the place she held most dear was her decadeslong residence at Anchor Beach in Milford, CT; a place that she and her daughters will forever call home.

Having been an organ recipient, she was a dedicated volunteer and advocate of the National Kidney Foundation. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to www.kidney. org
