The Reverend Francis T. Carter, 78, Pastor Emeritus of St. Bernadette in New Haven, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Father Carter was the son of the late Francis W. and Catherine (Shanley) Carter and was born in New Haven, CT, on May 4, 1944. He is survived by his sister Catherine and brother-inlaw Lawrence Cowper of Milford. He was the uncle of James P. Cowper (Denise), Rebecca C. Moe (David), Elizabeth K. Jinks (Paul) and several great-nieces and nephews. Fr. Carter graduated from Notre Dame High School, Boston College, and Southern Connecticu­t State. He completed his theologica­l studies at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY. Father Carter was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend John F. Whealon, Archbishop of Hartford, on December 20, 1986 in the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, CT. Among Father Carter’s assignment­s were Holy Spirit in Newington, St. James in Manchester, Blessed Sacrament in Hamden, St. Mary in New Britain, and St. Bridget in Cheshire. He also served at St. Brigid in West Hartford and St. Bernadette in New Haven as Pastor. He was known to be a pastor always present to his flock and who sacrificed often, without anyone knowing, for the good of those in his parish and parochial school. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 11 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, St. Paul VI Parish, 2819 Whitney Ave, Hamden, with the Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford as the principal celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. Visiting hours will take place Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on February 7, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. preceding the Mass.
