Sally’s Apizza opening first restaurant outside state

- By Leeanne Griffin

Sally’s Apizza opened its first restaurant outside of Connecticut last week, debuting its new Massachusetts restaurant in Woburn on Thursday.

The Woburn pizzeria, located in Woburn Village at 300 Mishawum Drive, is the first of several Sally’s restaurants to open in the commonwealth, according to a news release. Sally’s plans to open in Boston’s Seaport District, the release confirmed.

The Massachusetts location will feature the same New Haven-style coal-fired pizza that made the Wooster Street original famous, including its classic tomato pie (without mozzarella), a mozzarella pie and a white pie with potato and rosemary.

Like the newer Sally’s outposts in Fairfield and Stamford, the Woburn restaurant will offer an expanded menu of appetizers, like oven-charred Brussels sprouts, Italian wings with Calabrian chili and meatballs served with grilled focaccia, along with selections of salumi and mozzarella.

Woburn’s menu will also offer an expanded entree section, with chicken and eggplant parmesan dishes, a 12-ounce ribeye and numerous pasta options, according to the news release. The restaurant also has a full bar with beer, wine and cocktails, and the Woburn location will carry Foxon Park sodas from East Haven.

Sally’s, started by Frank Pepe’s nephew Sal Consiglio in 1938, has earned national attention and praise over the decades, with the spotlight usually shining on its classic tomato pie. Brothers Bobby and Ricky Consiglio, Sal’s sons, sold the New Haven eatery to today’s owners Lineage Hospitality in 2018, but are still involved in the business.

“We are excited for Bostonians to experience Sally’s and make memories a little closer to home,” Ricky Consiglio said in a statement. “Everyone on the team is committed to transporting the same experience our father dreamed up 85 years ago, and with the expansion of the menu and the bar, there really now is something for everyone, ensuring we stay in business for another 85 years!”

Sally’s website lists restaurants coming to Newington, Norwalk and Wethersfield. A Sally’s representative said Monday that the Wethersfield and Norwalk restaurants are slated to open in the first quarter of 2024, with Norwalk coming later in the quarter. Newington is projected to open early in the third quarter of 2024.

A Sally’s will openwat the new Jordan’s Furniture store at Westfarms mall in West Hartford, the company announced at a preview introducing the store Monday. The entrance to the store from the mall’s Center Court will include a 6,000square-foot Sally’s with a full bar and a complete restaurant menu, Jordan’s CEO Eliot Tatelman said. It’s scheduled to open in April.
