We said goodbye to a fine Irishman this week, John Francis Flannigan, III passed away on March 6th at Yale’s Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven after his courageous battle. He was surrounded by his close-knit and loving family. Predeceased by his parents, Ann D. and John F. Flannigan, II, John is survived by his sisters, Mary Nichols (Larry) of Trumbull, Kathy Pitura (Steve) of East Hartford, Soozi Flannigan of Madison, Cindy Flannigan (Mike) of West Haven, Molly Baldo (Dean) of Madison and his brother Robby Flannigan (Lana) of Kershaw, SC and his dear, longtime friend, Dick McSweegan of Madison. John was proud of all his nieces and nephews Christopher (Mollie) Pitura, Matthew Pitura, Jillian (Greg) Buggisch, Frank ( Jacqueline) Baldo, RJ Baldo, Chris, Jeff and Brendan Nichols, Emily Wininger (Matt), Scott Wininger and many great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many devoted cousins and friends — everybody loved Johnny “John Boy” Flannigan.

John loved life and lived it to the fullest. Loyal, wise and smart – he was always the life of the party. Known for his dapper and colorful style and quick wit, John would light up the room. His presence will be missed by his many friends and at family gatherings of all kinds – especially his annual 4th of July Lobstah party.

Blessed with charisma and the ability to talk to people from all walks of life, John was also artistic and creative. Cards and letters arrived decorated with flowers or cartoons. Big or small projects, you could always count on him to lend a helping hand. He would show up to help family, friends and neighbors: mowing their lawns, shoveling, carpentry, dump runs; he was a real “Mr. Fixit” for anyone in need. So many were blessed with John’s generous spirit.

John was an Insulator for Local 33 and recently retired after 44 years of service. He loved all sports and was a gifted athlete playing shortstop with his “rocketarm” for many years on the Madison Madmen softball team. Later, he became an avid golfer and spent many happy hours with his family and friends honing his skills on the course. He had a ZEST for life (and hot sauce) that we will never forget.

John faced his illness with the same courage that he faced other challenges in his life — with hope and bravery. He taught us all to make the most of life and to LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH. The family would like to thank his many friends, especially David Clifford and Ned Doyle for being there, and Dr. Stacey Stein, Alfredo Axtmayer, and the tremendous staff on Smilow NP12. A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
