Jeter’s calf springs back

- BY ANTHONY MCCARRON

TAMPA — Derek Jeter saw game action for the first time in a week Friday and showed evidence that his injured left calf is healing by going 1-for-2 with a single in three innings at shortstop against Minnesota.

“It was good,” Jeter said. “Running was good, defense was good. ... I’m not stealing bases right now, but it’s the same as when I came back (from a different calf injury) last summer. You still have to be smart about it. It’s still spring training. But everything was fine.”

Jeter likely will play five innings on Sunday, Joe Girardi said. “He came out fine,” the manager said.

ANDY DANDY

Andy Pettitte threw live batting practice Friday for the first time in the 39-year-old’s comeback, tossing 26 pitches in a brief session. “I’m pleasantly surprised,” Pettitte said. “I don’t want to get overexcited because I haven’t done anything yet. But I expect to be back where I was, or I wouldn’t have come back. So I’ll be disappointed if I don’t, and I feel like I’m getting there.”

Pettitte may pitch in a game before the end of spring training, but he said a realistic target date for the majors for him remains May 1.

HILL YEAH!

The Yankees got two solid starts Friday as Ivan Nova allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings in a 6-4, splitsquad victory over the Twins in Tampa and Hiroki Kuroda gave up one run and six hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 5-3 win over the Phillies in Clearwater.

KEEP HOPE ALIVE

The Yankees announced Friday that their annual community event, HOPE WEEK, will take place this from June 25-29.
