For Alyson Hannigan, this ‘Pie’ was sweet

- BY NICOLE LYN PESCE

Alyson Hannigan skipped her own high school reunion, but she couldn’t resist another piece of “American Pie.”

“This is the reunion you would actually want to go to,” said Hannigan, who reprises her role as band geek-turned-babe Michelle in “American Reunion,” opening Friday.

“The first time we all came together, the energy was so intense, and we were all so giddy, that you just knew we were in store for something special.” The 28-year-old actress admits she was hesitant at first to sign onto the fourth “Pie” flick.

“They definitely had to twist my arm,” she said, “but when the script finally came in ... they really did such a great job. It was really fun to go back in time.”

Her reported $3 million salary for the film probably sweetened the deal.

The latest installment reunites the entire original cast from the 1999 hit.

Hannigan was most excited to see Eugene Levy, who plays her father-in-law.

“Any day I can spend with Eugene is a gift,” she said. “I want him to move next door to me so I can still have breakfast, lunch and dinner with him.”

This sequel stands out as her favorite in the “Pie” franchise.

“They just got it right this time,” Hannigan said. “They got the humor, and they got the heart. I love that they didn’t shy away from actual issues that people in their 30s are going through.”

Issues such as Michelle and her husband, Jim (Jason Biggs), suffering a sexual slump after becoming parents.

Hannigan, who has a 3-year-old daughter with her husband and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” co-star Alexis Denisof, is expecting a second child in June.

She understands the struggle of juggling romance with parenthood too well.

“Once a week we have our own little date night,” she said, “even if it’s just sitting at a restaurant and eating warm food.”

Fans have grown up watching Hannigan overcome milestones, from playing an awkward teenage witch in “Buffy” to Jason Segel’s better half, Lily, on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother.”

Although Hannigan’s pregnancy coincides with Lily’s this season, being a mommy-to-be on TV isn’t child’s play.

“My character is farther along, so I did have to wear a pad over the bump in a majority of episodes,” explained Hannigan.

“The pad gets tighter because the bump keeps growing, and that is surprisingly uncomfortable! I hope this baby is not getting claustrophobic.”

Hannigan has otherwise relished coming of age on screen.

“It’s been very cathartic,” she said. “‘Buffy’ gave me the high school that I would have liked. Even with demons and being over a hell-mouth, it was better than my own high school!”

“It’s the same with ‘American Pie,’” she added. “We had the luxury of getting to relive the vibe of the first film. The audience who loved it originally will love it now.”
