Field: Barbers provide hair care services to clients – typically men – that range from cuts, trims, shampoos and styling, though they may also fit hairpieces and offer scalp treatments and facial shavings. Some barbers possess licenses to color, bleach or highlight hair and provide permanent-wave treatments too, as well as skin-care and nail treatments.

Job: The business of a barber is cutting or dressing hair, shaving and trimming beards and providing related grooming services such as skin and nail care depending upon their license. Barbers typically work out of barbershop­s or salons, though some are employed by spas, hotels and resorts. Barbers can operate under full-time or part-time hours and rely on regular clients and repeat service to grow their business. As barbers spend most of their workdays on their feet, good health and stamina are important parts of the job.

Training: A ll states require barbers to be l icensed. Full-time programs typically take nine months to complete, though many profession­als take advanced courses in specialize­d services to keep up with current trends. Qualificat­ions vary by state, though a high school diploma or GED is generally required to attend a state-licensed barber or cosmetolog­y school. Passing a license exam is necessary following the completion of training. The test typically consists of written and oral examine. In some cases a practical test is also required.

Skills: Interperso­nal skills are a cornerston­e of this profession as barbers must communicat­e and work closely with clients. A keen eye for detail is also important, and managerial skills might be required as barbers who own or operate shops will be required to oversee employees, keep business and inventory records and order supplies.

Salary: In 2008, the median hourly wage for barbers, including tips, was $11.56 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Upside: Approximat­ely 44 percent of Barbers are self-employed allowing for flexible work schedules, and employment is expected to grow at faster-thanaverag­e rates as the profession is seeing a renaissanc­e, particular­ly those barbers that specialize in classic cuts and antiquated styles.
