Mcdermott’s murdered mom

- BY CRISTINA EVERETT with JOYCE CHEN

DYLAN McDERMOTT is finally getting closure 45 years after his mother’s death.

After the “American Horror Story” actor (r.) contacted Waterbury, Conn., police last year with unanswered questions about the tragedy, the local Republican-American reported Monday that a reopened investigation has concluded Diane McDermott was killed in 1967 by her now-deceased gangster boyfriend, John Sponza.

Dylan, 50, was only 5 when his mother was shot in February 1967. An investigation concluded she accidentally shot herself with a gun Sponza had been polishing.

But a review of the autopsy determined that the murder weapon had been pressed to the back of Diane’s head, and said the gun found near her body was too small a caliber to have been the weapon used to kill her.

Police said the evidence would be enough to file murder charges against Sponza, as well as implicate him in at least two other unsolved homicides. But Sponza, who police said had ties to organized crime, was shot to death in 1972. His body was found in the trunk of a car in a Waltham, Mass., grocery store parking lot.

Dylan has yet to comment on the investigation, but his sister, Robin Herrera, said she was relieved the truth has been uncovered. “I’m happy to know my mother wasn’t mentally ill or depressed,” she said. “Somebody took her from us; she didn’t leave us.”
