What’s OLED is new again
Two longtime television industry rivals are joining forces to tackle the next wave in TV tech.
Sony and Panasonic on Monday said they would partner to develop TV sets using OLED — organic light emitting diode — displays as the Japanese electronics giants try to regain market share from South Korean competitors Samsung and LG.
“It’s a sign of the times of how challenging the TV business is when two serious competitors are teaming up because they have to,” Consumer Electronics Association’s Jim Barry, aka “The Digital Answer Man,” told the Daily News.
Samsung and LG both plan to introduce 55-inch OLED sets this year.
The first models will likely retail for $5,000 to $10,000, Barry said.
