Olga Granovsky & Ian McCormick

- Ashley Lofters

Manhattan. Olga and Ian met through a website. Olga, who did not have a picture on her profile, took a leap of faith and sent Ian an email.

“He was like, ‘I don’t typically reply to girls with no pictures, but I’ll make an exception,’ ” she remembers.

The couple, both 31, met for brunch on their first date and spent the day walking around Central Park. The connection was immediate, and four years later, Ian, a New York Observer employee, decided it was time to propose.

Ian, who performs improv comedy as a hobby, planned to pop the question during one of his shows. He told his friends and family about the proposal, but kept Olga out of the loop.

“I was suspecting something was a little different, but I didn’t want to think that he’s going to propose and then he wouldn’t, so I kind of put it out of my head,” says Olga, an interior designer.

There were more than 50 people in the audience, many of whom were strangers, and at the end of the show, Ian asked the question.

“He actually was really funny,” says Olga. “Instead of asking will you marry me, he asked me, ‘Will you change your Facebook status to engaged?’”

Ian never officially asked Olga to marry him, but she loved his proposal nonetheless. “It was actually nice, because a lot of people captured it on film and there was a video on YouTube of it,” she says.

Olga began planning the wedding immediately, staying hands-on with all the details of her big day.

“I think I can be a wedding planner in my next life,” she jokes.

The wedding and reception took place at the Riverview. At the breathtaking venue, which overlooks the Hudson River, Olga walked down the aisle in front of 140 guests.

As a surprise to his bride, Ian had secretly been taking language lessons and was able to read his vows almost entirely in Russian, Olga’s native language.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” says Olga. “Even people who didn’t understand what he was saying got all emotional.”
