Sergio leads by one; it’s Roger vs. Novak

Sergio Garcia shot a 4-under par 66 on Saturday to take the lead at 14-under 196 after three rounds at the Wyndham Championsh­ip in Greensboro, N.C.

Tim Clark (67) and Bud Cauley (66) were a stroke back, with Jason Dufner (63), Harris English (68) and first-round leader Carl Pettersson (68) at 12-under. Garcia — whose second-round 63 marked his best PGA Tour round in a decade — made a move with consecutiv­e birdies midway through the back nine that helped him leapfrog his playing partner, Clark.

n Japan’s Mika Miyazato, the co-firstround leader, shot a 4-under 68 for an 11-under 133 total and a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the LPGA Tour’s Safeway Classic in North Plains, Ore. South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu (68), the Toledo Classic winner last week, was second.

FEDERER, DJOKOVIC IN FINAL

Top-seeded Roger Federer overcame Swiss countryman Stanislas Wawrinka, 7-6 (4), 6-3, to reach the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. He’ll go for his record fifth Cincinnati title against No. 2 Novak Djokovic; the Serb beat No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro, 6-3, 6-2, in a reprise of their Olympic bronze medal match that the Argentine won.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams played through back pain that forced her to get treatment and reduced her second serve to 63 mph by the third set in falling to No. 9 Li Na, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Li will play No. 5 Angelique Kerber, who topped No. 4 Petra Kvitova, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

CHARLES, SUN REBOUND, TOP LIBS

Tina Charles had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the host Sun to an 85-74 victory over the Liberty. The Sun (16-5) had been beaten by the Libs on Thursday night in Newark when the WNBA season resumed after the Olympic break; Charles had been held to four points on 1-of-7 shooting. Cappie Pondexter had 17 points and five assists for the Liberty (7-13).

ALLGAIER WINS IN MONTREAL

Justin Allgaier passed Jacques Villeneuve on the final lap during a greenwhite-checkered finish and won the Nationwide race at Circuit Gilles in Montreal, depriving the French Canadian of his first victory at any level in NASCAR. On a track named for his later father, Villeneuve had survived three late restarts; Sam Hornish Jr. finished second and Villeneuve third. Danica Patrick led 20 laps and ran second to Villeneuve for another 12 before she suffered track bar issues in her No. 7 Chevy after hitting a shoe thrown on track.
