THE BATTLE OF SARATOGA
Now in its third decade, the Battle of Saratoga features a new twist for the 2012 edition. The Daily Racing Form’s Mike Beer joins in, taking on Daily News veterans Dave Little and defending champion Jerry Bossert in the war of wit and wagers. Each has an imaginary bankroll of $1,000, and the handicapper with the biggest bankroll on Labor Day wins:
JERRY BOSSERT
BANKROLL: $836.30 I’ve got to give Little credit for one thing: He’s good with numbers.
He came back from vacation to tell me I shorted myself 20 cents in my Battle bankroll and that Beer gave himself $40 too much. For once, I’ve got to say: He’s all right.
SUNDAY’S PLAYS: Our Entourage (6th) could only get second, so I dropped $4 on the day.
MONDAY’S PLAYS: I really like Voodoo Storm ( 6th) so it’s $25 to win and place, turf only.
TOTAL: $50
DAVE LITTLE
BANKROLL: $722.50 So I’m back in the office Sunday and I see that Mike must have made a big hit. Good for him, I said.
Until I looked deeper and saw that he gave himself $40 extra. How convenient! Who taught this guy how to add? Melky Cabrera?
SUNDAY’S PLAYS: Got a thrill when Splendiferous (6th) burst on the scene late, but in the end, I
dropped $24.
MONDAY’S PLAYS: Elvis, as in Trujillo, is in the building. The Jersey regular makes the trip up Rt. 87 to ride Raging Six (9th). $30 to win and $5 exactas using Little Drama and Our Edge underneath.
TOTAL: $40
MIKE BEER
BANKROLL: $939.25 I don’t usually pay that much attention, but there were two days of big crowds at Saratoga this weekend. And, I must be getting old, because all I did was complain about it.
SUNDAY’S PLAYS: Caught nothing, and not just in the Battle. Lost $70.
MONDAY’S PLAYS: $10 exacta box Gallant Fields and Little Drama (9th) and $20 to win on Little Drama.
TOTAL: $40
