CRAWFORD SURGERY

-

Boston’s Carl Crawford may have played his last game of the season. The Red Sox outfielder will meet with GM Ben Cherington, Bobby Valentine and team medical staff i n Boston Monday to decide whether he’ll have Tommy John surgery for a partially torn ligament i n his left elbow.

ESPN reported that Crawford is expected to have the operation Tuesday.

Several Boston outlets had reported that Crawford wants to have the surgery, which requires 6-to-9 months of recovery for position players.

Crawford was a major disappointment last season, his first with Boston after signing a $142 million, seven-year contract. He missed the first 89 games of this season while recovering from left wrist surgery. He partially tore his elbow ligament in April while rehabbing, slowing his return. Crawford was activated from the disabled list July 16 and is batting .282 with three homers and 19 RBI.

“Carl’s given it ever y thing he has,” Bobby Valentine said. “From everything I gather, the situation is kind of trending the wrong way.”

ESPNBoston.com repor ted that Crawford is concerned how the decision to have surgery would be interpreted by teammates and Boston fans.

Cherington said, “When it comes to the decision, we’ve got to focus mostly on what’s best for Carl.”
