Vilma will likely play; Venus in 1st final in 21/2 years

The Saints moved linebacker Jonathan Vilma from their physically unable to perform list to the active roster on Saturday, and he is expected to play for the first time this season Sunday at Tampa Bay. However, tight end Jimmy Graham did not make the trip because of his sprained right ankle.

The Saints terminated the contract of receiver Greg Camarillo to make room for Vilma, who is coming back from left knee surgery and is appealing his seasonlong ban in the NFL’s bounty probe of the Saints. His appeal hearing, and those of three other players facing suspension­s of various lengths, is set for Oct. 30. Former NFL commission­er Paul Tagliabue has been appointed as arbitrator for the appeal hearings.

n Ravens Pro Bowl LB Terrell Suggs (torn right Achilles, out all season) is expected to play Sunday vs. Houston after being activated from the PUP list, a league source told The Baltimore Sun.

VENUS MAKES FINAL

At the Luxembourg Open, Venus Williams reached her first final in 2 1/2 years, beating Andrea Petkovic, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Williams, hampered for two seasons by injuries and an autoimmune disease, will play Monica Niculescu, who beat Daniela Hantuchova, 6-1, 6-3. Niculescu, 25, has yet to win her first WTA title; Williams has won 43 singles titles, her last in February 2010 in Acapulco.

U.S. DRAWS WITH GERMANY

In Bridgeview, Ill., American Abby Wambach and Anja Mittag scored in the first half, and the U.S. women’s soccer team setttled for a 1-1 tie against Germany in its first game without former coach Pia Sundhage. The draw snapped a 14-game winning streak for the U.S.

LOVE, FURYK TIED

At St. Simons Island, Ga., Ryder Cup Davis Love III (66) and American compatriot Jim Furyk (66) were tied for the lead at 13-under 197 after three rounds of the McGladrey Classic, two shots clear of Arjun Atwal (69)

and D. J. Trahan ( 66).

BRITISH HORSE FINISHES 14-0

In Ascot, England, Frankel captured the Champions Stakes for his 14th straight victory and an end to a sterling career. Sent off as the 2-11 favorite in front of Queen Elizabeth II and 32,000 fans, the 4-year-old colt, named after American trainer Bobby Frankel, rallied to finish 13/4 lengths ahead of 2011 winner Cirrus Des Aigles (9-2) on a turf course labeled soft. He will stand at stud.
