Harvey’s set to weather Strasburg

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

DENVER — After what some veteran players have called the worst road trip ever, Mets righthander Matt Harvey cannot wait to get back to New York on Friday.

It’s not merely leaving behind three games snowed and/or rained out in four days or the brutal cold the Mets had faced on the days they have actually played.

No, the 24-year-old is eager to take the mound Friday night at Citi Field for a much anticipated matchup against Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg.

“It’s the first game home after a long road trip, the Nationals have a good lineup and you’ve got Strasburg on the mound Friday night,” Harvey said Wednesday. “It’s going to be fun and I am looking forward to it.”

The Mets’ scheduled game against the Rockies Wednesday night was postponed because of a second snowstorm blowing through Denver. No date has been set for a makeup of Wednesday’s game, but the Mets will play one regularly scheduled day game Thursday and will have to come back to Denver to play Wednesday’s originally scheduled game.

So about the only thing this trip through Minneapolis and Denver has not messed up for the Mets and their fans is that matchup Friday night.

“I just think that is important,” Terry Col- lins said. “We already disrupted the schedule, and if you disrupt it more, now you are talking about seven days if you move Matt Harvey back, I don’t think that is what you should do to your main guys. We’ll stay with what we’ve got,” Collins said. “(Jon) Niese tomorrow and Harvey on Friday.”

The Mets are skipping Wednesday’s scheduled starter, Jeremy Hefner, to keep the front end of their rotation on regular rest. That puts lefthander Niese on the mound Thursday for the series finale against the Rockies, weather permitting.

And that keeps Harvey (3-0, 0.83), who was named the National League Player of the Week for last week, on schedule to face Strasburg (1-2, 2.95) — two of the top exciting young pitchers in the majors.
