Collins’ move has Buck feeling pinch

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

CHICAGO — John Buck was unusually frustrated Tuesday night. Terry Collins lifted the veteran catcher for a pinch-hitter in the top of the ninth inning with a runner on second and two outs in the 5-4 loss to the White Sox. Buck was disappointed with that decision, but said his frustration was with the overall loss.

“That’s baseball,” said Buck, who was pulled in favor of Daniel Murphy. “Terry doesn’t have to talk to me about that move; that happens. I wouldn’t expect him to talk to me about it. I was just frustrated with the loss. I thought we should have won that game and I was frustrated.”

Collins did speak with Buck for several minutes before batting practice on Wednesday. Collins said that with Murphy on the bench and Buck having struggled over the past month-plus, he needed to make the move to give the Mets the best chance to win.

“The way things have been going,” Collins said, “I can’t sit there with Dan Murphy waiting to hit and not get him in the game.”

Buck went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Wednesday.

THE DAILY DAVIS UPDATE

Do not expect to see Ike Davis this weekend at Citi Field. After contemplating having the struggling slugger rejoin the team on Thursday in Colorado, the Mets are reconsidering that move with the Nationals bringing in two lefty starters this weekend. . . . Eric Young Jr. will have some swagger as he heads back to Denver for the first time since the Rockies designated him for assignment June 12. Young went 3-for-4 Wednesday night with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games. He is hitting .413 with the Mets.
