Dems: Ax tax deal for hiring students

- Kenneth Lovett

ALBANY — Assembly Democrats Thursday called for the repeal of a tax break for companies that hire teen workers.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said the controversial tax credit encourages businesses to hire students earning the minimum wage in place of higher-paid older and nonstudent workers.

The call to repeal the credit is part of the overall push by the Assembly Dems to accelerate the phase-in of the $9-an-hour minimumwage.

Senate Republicans, who help control the chamber, oppose both measures.
