Kid-burn HS hit with 8 violations
FIRE officials cited an elite Upper West Side public school for eight safety violations in a review that was launched after two children were burned in a botched chemistry lab experiment.
Investigators found safety concerns at Beacon High School that ranged from improper storage of dangerous chemicals to flawed safety equipment, officials said. The citations stemmed from a probe the FDNY launched to learn what caused the chemistry lab fireball that burned Alonzo Yanes and Julia Saltonstall, both 16, on Jan. 2.
Saltonstall was treated at a hospital and released, but Yanes, who suffered burns to his face, remains in critical condition at a Manhattan hospital.
Anna Poole — the 31-year-old teacher who was handling chemicals at the time of the mishap — continues to work at the school, despite the ongoing investigation. The school has 10 days to correct some of the violations and 30 days to rectify others, said FDNY spokesman James Long.
