THEY’LL MAKE A BIG IMPRESSION
The soul train is rolling into Brooklyn Heights. The Impressions will headline the “Let Freedom Ring” benefit concert at the historic Plymouth Church on Saturday.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doo-wop singers — including original member Sam Gooden — will belt out hits like “People Get Ready” and “Keep on Pushing.”
It’s all part of a benefit for Free the Slaves, which fights human trafficking worldwide.
“The Impressions are the soundtrack to the civil rights movement,” says Plymouth Church concert producer Jeffrey Gaskill.
At first glance, a preeminent doo-wop group might not seem to have much to say about the scourge of modern-day slavery. But Gaskill said the booking was intentional. “We’re trying to tie it all together with our musical history,” he said.
The Dap-Kings, a modern take on 1960s funk-soul, will also perform.
Even the setting for the concert plays a role in the event. The congregation at Plymouth Church — founded in 1847 by abolitionist minister Henry Ward Beecher — not only opposed slavery but continues to lead civil rights battles today.
