Hoop finals (not PSAL) at Garden

- -Staff report

NEW YORK City’s best public school basketball teams won’t be playing their championship games at the Garden this season, but the World’s Most Famous arena will be hosting some of the top squads in the country once the season is over.

The championship games of the Sixth Annual National High School Invitational — an event sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods and to be aired on ESPN — will take place at the Garden on April 5, about three weeks after the PSAL usually plays its boys and girls championship games there.

The Garden announced earlier this week that it will not be able to accomodate the PSAL this season because of scheduling conflicts. The league is currently exploring other options, including the possibility of playing the games at Barclays Center.

Meanwhile, the NHSI will at least give local basketball fans a chance to see some of the best prep players in a pro venue. The teams will be announced in March and the quarterfinals and semifinals of the event will be played on April 3-4, at a yet to be determined site in New York City.

The boys field will include eight of the top-ranked teams in the country, and the girls field will include four teams.

BONUS BALL

If Nets-Heat on a weekend night in Brooklyn isn’t enough for you, they’ll be some bonus basketball played at Barclays Center on Friday.

After the NBA game is over, a street-ball tournament will come to its conclusion on the same court, and fans who pay their way in to watch LeBron James and Co. take on the Nets can stick around to watch for no extra charge.

The semifinals and title game of the Red Bull Midnight Run, a tournament that began way back in June, will be played on the Barclays court on Friday.

Teams featuring the best street-ballers from New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., have played since June 1 to determine which teams get to play in the main event.

Qualifying events took place in each of the participating cities over the previous seven months.
