Vonn rips unhealthy models as ‘skinny fat’
A KNEE injury didn’t stop Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn from unleashing a verbal slalom on runway models.
The statuesque skier, speaking to Women’s Wear Daily, dismissed many in the current crop of catwalkers as too skinny and too lazy.
“I’ve been to a lot of photo shoots, and I see these girls that are just really thin,” the 2010 gold medalist declared last week. “They’re not healthy. They don’t work out.”
Vonn said some of the fashion figures, despite an aversion to food, remain flabby.
“Girls who are that skinny are actually fat,” said Vonn, the current girlfriend of Tiger Woods. “You can see the cellulite on the legs and on their butts. You know, I have cellulite too, but I go to the gym and I try to eat healthy. I think that’s a better model for girls to look up to than skinny people who need to eat more.”
Vonn, 28, was forced to give up her Olympic hopes last month after reinjuring her surgically repaired right knee. Vonn acknowledged the knee was too unstable for her return to the slopes.
She appeared on crutches Thursday night at the Heart Truth Fashion Show, an event to promote women’s cardiac health. Vonn, in a form-fitting red dress, told WWD that she was focused on remaining fit despite her injury.
“Health — that’s one of the reasons I’m here tonight,” she said. “Just in general, staying active and being healthy is important.”
Vonn was at the event a day before the opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics — her planned final stop on the comeback trail.
The skier tore up her ligaments and fractured her tibia in a February 2012 crash. She aggravated the injury in a Dec. 21 race in Val d’Isere, France.
Vonn also warned that what looks hot in the pages of Vogue is sometimes less enticing in person.
“It may look good in a magazine, but it’s not actually healthy,” she said.
