State Guard unit to get memorial
A MEMORIAL to the New York Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division is being dedicated to mark the 10-year anniversary of the unit’s mobilization before being deployed to Iraq.
The Rainbow Division Memorial is set to be at the New York Army National Guard Readiness Center at Fort Drum in Jefferson County, upstate.
Several thousand members of the National Guard in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts were activated for duty in May 2004 and trained at Fort Drum and New Jersey’s Fort Dix.
More than 23,000 soldiers assigned to the Troy-based 42nd Division served in Iraq. Ninety-two Rainbow Division soldiers died in Iraq.
