Coach regrets player clash
Special teams coordinator Tom Quinn expressed regret for his run-in with punter Steve Weatherford during the Giants’ win over Tennessee on Sunday. “It was an unfortunate incident that transpired obviously, that we both wish we could have back,” said Quinn. “We are fiery, we’re competitive, and it escalated way too far. I’ve got too much respect for the game and this organization and our head coach to have something like that put out there. We apologized, we were good the next punt. Just trying to communicate with him. He was frustrated with how he punted it, so that was it, just a miscommunication right there.”
Cameras caught the altercation during the television broadcast. It happened after Weatherford punted the ball down the middle of the field and it resulted in a touchback. Quinn maintained that he was trying to make a “coaching point” to Weatherford. He also noted that Weatherford was frustrated with the kick. Quinn grabbed Weatherford, and the punter quickly pushed his hands away. Quinn said his greatest regret was putting his hands on Weatherford.
“The fact that I put my hands on him,” Quinn said. “I let it get that way.”
Quinn noted that they’ve exchanged words before, most notably during one of the Super Bowl wins that Weatherford was a large contributor in.
BACK OFF
Eli Manning remained on the team’s injury list with a limited designation Thursday, but Tom Coughlin noticed no issues to report regarding the quarterback’s back.
“Eli practiced well and did everything,” Coughlin said. “There wasn’t any real restriction on him, so we feel good about that.”
O, WHAT AN HONOR
Odell Beckham was humbled by the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s decision to display the jersey he wore while making his one-handed catch against the Cowboys.
“What an honor for it to be in there,” he said. “It’s definitely something to be proud of, but it’s just the beginning for me.”
Beckham said he kept the red and white gloves he wore for the catch.
“They didn’t ask for the gloves,” he said.
